Whatchu talkin' about?

Sorry for the late notice! But here is the topic for tomorrow:

do you think it is more fun to be a parent
or a child?

Conversations in the Car: Vol. IX

While driving to some-forgotten destination, "Ticket to Ride" comes over the radio and I immediately begin to sing along. Hannah asks if I can change the station.

Me: "Why? These are the Beatles!"

Michaela: "Who are the Beatles?"

Me: "I have failed as a parent."

At least I now know how to occupy my kids' time over the summer... Music Appreciation 101 commences Monday morning.

You scream, I scream...

We all scream for...

I was given the opportunity to review the SodaStream Jet. It's a pretty cool little machine! Hannah and Michaela have had a ton of fun making their own soda.

Wanna win your own at-home-soda-making machine? Head on over to my review blog to find out how!

The 2009 - 2010 school year has officially ended.

And not a moment too soon. The girls and I are glad summer break is here!

Hannah is most excited about going swimming and playing with her friends.

Michaela can't wait for our vacation getaway.

Me?

I'm just thrilled I get a reprieve from packing lunches every. single. day.

(Oh, and remember all those glue sticks that were on Michaela's supply list? She came home with four of them. Apparently, there was a surplus and the teacher let the class take some extras home.)

What are you excited about for this summer?

Table Topics Tuesday: If it weren't for the last minute, I'd never get anything done.

I've never claimed to be perfect... in fact, I have many shortcomings. And a few bad habits, as well. I stay up too late, drink too much Coca-Cola, and crack my knuckles.

Sure, I could use more sleep. And I know I should cut down on the soda and drink more water.

(I'm not giving up the knuckle cracking, though.)

(Sorry, Mom.)

But the one bad habit I wish I could break the most? I procrastinate all. the. time.

I've always been one who puts tasks off to the last minute... whether it be a report for school, an errand to run, (writing a blog post about procrastination...)

Of course, when I procrastinate, I just stress myself out ten times more than if I'd just done the task as soon as possible. AUGH!

Like most bad habits, this one is so hard for me to break! I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and I've read that perfectionists tend to procrastinate because if they can't do something perfectly, they'd rather not do it at all.

But the first step to breaking a bad habit is knowing you have it, right?

this is the end

So maybe you've heard this little TV show is coming to an end tonight...

The series finale is just hours away... but I'm still in denial that one of the finest hours on television is coming to an end.

Some
{cough, Shane, cough} may say, "It's just a television show"... but as my friend and fellow Susser Lula succinctly put it:

"I'm bidding farewell to some of the most brilliantly written characters to ever grace the screen, big or small. These deeply flawed, hurting people, all of whom are seeking some form of redemption, all of whom have made me laugh, cry, scream, sigh, and applaud...all of whom I've grown to love these past six years.

I will miss them."

I will miss being moved to tears by Michael Giacchino's brilliant score:

Those darn cellos get me every time.

And I'll be honest, I will also miss the weekly eye candy:

Jolly Ranchers on legs, y'all. Jolly Ranchers on legs.

(One thing I will not miss, however, are Doc Jensen's recaps on EW.com. Don't get me wrong, the recaps are awesome and informative... but they're anywhere from
eight to twelve PAGES long. Oy, just thinking about reading one makes my head ache.)

Mostly, I'll miss my fellow LOST fanatics. I can't remember another TV show that so many people have been just as passionate about as I have been. It's been awesome to talk about this show with my sister, my brother, my friends... and everyone who contributed to or commented on Sussing Out Lost.

I think we can all agree it's been one wild ride.

to the birthday boy

Thirty eight years ago you entered this world...

And sixteen years ago you entered my life. I've cherished every single second since that moment... even though there have been many a few times where it may not have seemed that way. You are my rock, and I can't imagine my life without you.

Happy Birthday, Shane!

Table Topics Tuesday: "To speak kindly does not hurt the tongue"

We all know that words can hurt, sometimes even more so than a physical hit. Everyone's heard of that saying, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."

Speaking kindly doesn't take that much effort. Even the answer to the question "Do these pants make my butt look fat?" can be given truthfully
and kindly.

For myself, it's much harder for me to speak honestly, especially in situations where I've been hurt or frustrated. It's hard for me to admit that I've been disappointed or let down. I'd rather hide my feelings than confront the fact that they've been bruised.

Unfortunately, that's not the message I want to pass along to my daughters. I want them to know it's OK to stand up and speak out about what you believe in. Or when someone has wronged you, to say, "That's not cool and this is how I feel about it".

Hopefully, I can learn to lead by example!

Your turn!

is it harder for you to speak kindly
or honestly?

Just 6 days of school left...

Yep, that's right... 6 more days left in this school year. Just 6 days (well, 5 now...) of getting up early, getting the girls up and ready, packing lunches...

WOOHOO!

On the flip side, however...

Summer break starts next week and I have no idea what I'm going to do with these kids. Yes, we do have our mini-vacation coming up. And the girls will have a week of VBS from 9 a.m. to noon. But that only takes us to about June 15th. There's still another six weeks of summer before the next school year begins.

Other than spending the afternoons at my mom's pool, I'm at a loss as to what to do to keep Hannah and Michaela occupied (and my sanity intact). I'm afraid if I don't keep them busy, the girls will just want to lounge around all day watching Disney Channel reruns.

A mama can only take so many episodes of "Hannah Montana".

Got any ideas?

Table Topics Tuesday: Vacay!

Ever since our trip to Disney World a few years ago, I've wanted to go back.

(Hannah and Michaela, too!)

(Shane... notsomuch.)

That's where I'd
like to go on vacation this year... unfortunately, a week at the House of Mouse just isn't in the budget right now.

Instead, this summer we'll be taking a short trip to Memphis to visit the zoo, and Arkansas to visit Hot Springs National Park.

Just a few days to get away... and we've never visited either of these places, so it will be fun to check out these new places.

A chance to get away for a few days, visit new places and (hopefully)make new memories? I'll take it!

Mother's Day Wrap-Up

Mother's Day 2010 can go down in the history books as a pretty decent day.

I did receive the Vera Bradley handbag I asked for (yay!)... Shane also added a bottle of "Mad Housewife" white zinfandel:

After church, Shane and the girls treated me to brunch at O'Charley's. We then headed to the Chattanooga Market for "Mom Takes the Cake", where we sampled cupcakes from local bakeries... red velvet, vanilla, and two different strawberry ones (we all agreed the red velvet ones were the best)

I did cook dinner and bake some scrumptious banana muffins...

...but other than that, I took the day off. I didn't even do a single load of laundry!

Of course, this just means the pile of dirty clothes to be washed tomorrow is bigger.

{sigh}

How was your Mother's Day? Did you do anything special?

In case I needed a reminder...

Michaela made this for me:

Happy Mother's Day to all you "AWSOME" moms out there!

take me to the movies

The summer movie season is almost here!

(and BTW, how is the summer movie season almost here?! how can summer be just around the corner?! where has this year gone to?!)

Anyway...

I know I'll be seeing this one when it comes out in June...

Eclipse is my favorite book of the series... I'm hoping the movie will be good. From what I've seen from the trailer, it should be. {fingers crossed}

I will definitely take the girls to see "Toy Story 3"...

The girls also want to see the fourth "Shrek" movie...

(Antonio Banderas as "Puss in Boots" totally rocks my world. He's awesome.)

I already mentioned I wouldn't mind seeing "The A-Team"...

Ahem.

Then there are a few movies that look good, but I don't know if I want to shell out 10 bucks to see them at the theater...

What summer movies do you want to see?

you know its a bad day when your fat pants are tight

If you happen to follow me on Twitter, you probably know that Monday was NOT a good day for me...

I overslept that morning... and the day just went downhill from there.

Actually, it started the night before... when I realized "Teacher Appreciation Week" started Monday and the girls were supposed to bring flowers for their teachers the next morning. I wasn't about to run to the Bi-Lo at 10 p.m., which meant we'd have to go before school the next morning.

So, naturally... I overslept. I thought to myself, "No biggie... the girls will just have to be late." We got ready, had breakfast and did the rest of our normal morning routine... and then it was off to the store. The girls picked their flowers... Hannah, a carnation and Michaela, a rose... we paid, and then were on our way.

As she was getting in the car, Michaela somehow managed to snap her flower's stem in half. So back inside the store we go for another flower.

I managed to get the girls to school only 15 minutes late. After that, I was off to do errands which included:
  • dropping off donations at the Goodwill
  • making a deposit at the bank
  • filling my car with gas
  • making a run to Target for teacher gifts, birthday presents and other things
  • grocery shopping
  • mailing a package at the post office
  • dropping off a package at the UPS store
  • taking paper to the recycling center

I got gas, did the bank deposit and Target run, and dropped off the donations at Goodwill... and then I spotted Hannah's forgotten lunchbox in the backseat. By this point it was about a quarter after 10, and there was no way I would be able to finish my errands and get back out to the school by the time Hannah went to lunch (which was in a about an hour). So I nixed the grocery shopping and UPS store... but was able to go to the post office and drop off the recycling.

After taking Hannah her lunch, I decided to just go back home. I was feeling crampy and bloated (thank you, PMS) and didn't feel like getting back out to finish my errands. I did some laundry, read a little, took a short nap... this part of my day was all right, actually!

But it didn't last long.

After I had already started making dinner, I realized we had no spaghetti noodles. I had already started browning meat for the sauce, so I started to dig through the pantry to see what other type of pasta I could use. And that's when an open bag of rice tipped over and dumped out... all over the pantry and floor.

It was at this point, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Thankfully, Shane was there to take over dinner-making duty while I cleaned up the mess.

After dinner I did go back out to do my grocery shopping and treated myself to a chocolate shake on the way home. I don't know if it was the chocolate, but I did start to feel better!

I know in the grand scheme of things my bad day wasn't so "bad"... but when your day doesn't go as planned, it's hard not to get frustrated.
