And the snow came down...

Most nights during dinner we have the TV set to the evening news. And most nights, the girls don't pay much attention to the newscast... but last night when the local weatherman came on, the girls took notice of one word he uttered:

SNOW.

The forecast called for a "wintry mix"... Hannah and Michaela thought they had better do their "snow dance" before going to bed. Unfortunately, they forgot to do their little ritual...

But they didn't need to bother.

School was dismissed early... but it didn't start to snow until about an hour after we got home. Around 2:30 I went out to take a few pictures of the "snow"...

I figured we'd get just a light dusting, like we did three weeks ago. But a few hours later, the snow and sleet was still coming down. Shane called to say he'd be getting home late, if he made it at all, as the roads were starting to get icy.

Here's what the yard looked like at 5:30:

Shane was able to make it home... finally. What is normally a 30 minute drive home took two and a half hours. And he had to leave his car at the entrance to our neighborhood, as he couldn't get his car up the hill.

Of course, Hannah and Michaela are LOVING the snow. They talked their dad into going out for an impromptu snowball fight...

And a snow angel or two...

As I type this, I can hear the sleet hitting the window behind me. We may get another 3 to 5 inches overnight...

Which is fine by me, as long as we don't lose power.

It's Thursday and I am so ready for this week to be over.

The happenings at the NutHouse:

The day I have been dreading since Hannah started kindergarten has finally arrived... the day she came home saying she has to do a science fair project. I was hoping it was not a mandatory assignment... alas, I'm not that lucky.

Next project on the horizon is to re-do the girls' bathroom. They've chosen this "tiddlywinks pink collection" from Target:

Cute, right?

Good news! My brother and sister-in-law are expecting their 3rd! A girl, due in June. They haven't decided on a name yet. I'm trying to convince them what a perfect name "Shannon" is...

Hannah and Michaela have decided they want a slumber party (Lord help me) for their birthdays this year. I made the invites using Picnik...

The invitations have been shipped and I'm anxiously waiting for them to get here... I'm hoping they turned out okay!

It feels as though this week has just dragged on... anyone else feel this way?

I should have better faith in my husband.

Grocery shopping is one of those rare chores I actually don't mind doing. Most times I'm able to go by myself (hallelujah!)... I take my iPod with me and stroll up and down the aisles at a leisurely pace.

But when it came time for the weekly trip to Publix, I wasn't feeling well and didn't want to go... yet we were in dire need of groceries.

I somewhat reluctantly asked Shane if he'd make a run to the store, and he agreed to do so.

I made out a list... and not the hastily scribbled one I usually do for myself. This time I tried to be as detailed as possible. I even grouped "like" items together, in hopes of making it as easy for him as I could...

I gave Shane the list and a few coupons... and hoped for the best. I'll be honest... all I kept thinking about was this post from Jill... how she sent her husband to the grocery store (with a list, even!) and he came back with parsley in a tube.

(A tube! I didn't even know such a thing existed.)

(And I don't mean to make it sound like Shane has no idea what he's doing... but sometimes...

He has no idea what he's doing.)

With final instructions of "don't forget to use the coupons!" and "call me if you need me!", Shane headed to the store...

He came back with every item from the list except for one (because they were out of)... a few items that weren't on the list (Cheetos, for the kids)... and he only had to call twice (the first time to ask what size bag of flour to get and the second to ask what aisle the peanut butter was on).

So, yeah... maybe I should give him a little more credit.

Nah.

Notice anything different?

I felt it was time to spruce the place up a little bit.

And Tonya did a fabulous job!

There may be some tweaking to do, yet... but I could not be more pleased with my new look. It's so bright and pretty and I just loves it! Check out my new navigation bar up there at the top! And these nifty sidebar titles.

And Tonya... she's amazing to work with. I'm sure my indecisiveness drove her crazy, but she patiently put up with me! I cannot recommend her highly enough.

And not only did Tonya give this little blog o' mine a makeover... she also gave my Twitter page a new look!

(speaking of which, are you following me on Twitter? If you are, thanks! If you aren't... why not?!)

THANK YOU, Tonya!

Overheard

When:
last night after dinner

Where: around our kitchen table

What: Shane helping the girls with their homework

Shane (to Michaela): "Now you need to study your math facts... it says you'll have a 'mad minute' tomorrow."

Hannah: "A 'mad minute'? Mommy has one of those every day."

Yes, she does, Hannah... Yes. She. Does.

winter wonderland

Compared to the arctic temps of last week, the "heat wave" we've been having these last few days has been wonderful.

I never thought I'd be so happy to see a high of 48 degrees...

Anyway, the weekend of the great snowfall of 2010, Shane had the brilliant idea of driving up to Fall Creek Falls State Park to see the falls iced over. Shane and Hannah did the same thing last January, but this time Michaela and I went along as well.

While the falls were pretty to look at, I'm fairly certain it took two days for my toes to thaw. It was C-O-L-D.

We found the swimming hole completely frozen. Hannah walked out to the ice immediately, but it took some coaxing to get Michaela to go out there...

And no swimming this time... just some "ice spinning":

video

Did you catch Michaela saying "That's enough!" even before she spun all the way around? This kid is many things, but a daredevil she's not...

I will gladly take one for the team.

Having never seen an episode of The A-Team, Shane was a bit surprised when I mentioned I wouldn't mind seeing the upcoming movie:

Shane: "Really? It doesn't seem like your type of movie."

Me: "Well, we usually see movies I want to see... and I know you liked the TV show; I figured you'd like to see the movie."

Shane: "I still can't believe you've never watched a single episode of The A-Team."

Me: "No, honey, I've never seen The A-Team... I was watching quality television like The Cosby Show and Family Ties when I was a kid. But if you want to go see "The A-Team" movie when it comes out, I'm all for it."

Here's the upcoming movie trailer... and right around the 0:55 mark you'll see the one reason why I'm eager willing to see it:

Just in case you missed it...

Ahem.

Anyone else plan on drooling over Bradley Cooper's abs seeing this movie?

take a picture

I finally decided what to do with the pictures from my "photo a day" project...

I'm posting the pics in a new blog!

These are my favorites from the last two weeks...

Most days I have no idea what to take a photo of. And there have been a few days where it's 11:30 at night and I have yet to take a picture of something! But I'm determined to stick with this project... even if it means taking photograph after photograph of my kids.

Feel free to visit worth a thousand words and check out the rest of my photos!

"I enjoy being a girl"

But today? Notsomuch.

Pretty sure it's the hormones talking here, but I think men have it way easy.

Guys don't have to shave their legs. Or pluck their eyebrows. They don't have to wear heels or squeeze into Spanx.

And don't even get me started on the joys of menstruation, pregnancy and childbirth...

I suppose one could argue that women don't have to shave or wax or wear Spanx. Pregnancy and childbirth, too... but the menstruating thing is kind of a given. At least for awhile, anyway.

Again, I think it's the hormones taking over. I'm bloated, cramping and feel a headache coming on.

It's not too early for a bowl of ice cream, is it? I think that would make me feel better...

There's still time!

It's not a national holiday or anything, but the day (or what's left of it...) is kind of a big deal here in the blogosphere...

National Delurking Day!

Anyone out there who reads my random drivel but has never left a comment, now is your chance to come out of the shadows...

introduce yourself!

tell me a joke... or what you had for dinner tonight... or how fabulous I am...

(just kidding on that last one... well, maybe...)

So come on and "delurk"! You know you wanna...

Just gettin' my random on...

What happened to "global warming"? I am so over this cold weather... the temperature needs to get back to normal ASAP. We've had the heat running constantly, trying to keep warm. The electric bill came in the mail last week... first my jaw almost hit the floor and then I was near tears when I saw how high it was. GAH.

I hate retaining water. I think being bloated is what I hate most about PMS. Well, the cramps suck, too... but it's annoying as hell when your pants don't fit due to water retention.

Why is it that the song you can't stand the most, inevitably is the one that gets stuck in your head?!

Some of you wanted to see the boots I got for Christmas... so here you go:

At first I tried to take a pic while wearing the boots... but I couldn't get one to come out right. Then the light bulb went off and I realized I should take the picture of just the boots, not my feet in the boots.

Anyway, they're from Bearpaw. And I think they're fabulous and I love 'em.

*I guess the lighting made my boots look BLUE in my picture... but they really are brown! This is what they look like:

I watched (500) Days of Summer yesterday. If you haven't seen this movie, I highly recommend it! Loved it... I think it's now one of my all-time favorite movies.

And this? Just one of the best movie scenes ever (don't watch the clip, Angie! wait until you see the movie!!!)

And...

that's all I got.

Now it's your turn. Hit me with a random thought...

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

I am *so* not the fashion plate.

I wouldn't say I am someone who is up-to-date on the latest fashion trends.

I tend to choose clothes that are "comfy" rather than "stylish". In fact, most days you'll find me wearing elastic-waist yoga pants and a tee shirt.

Or, if I'm feeling extra fancy... a velour tracksuit.

A trend I find adorable are those headbands with flowers attached to them...

I bought this one a few weeks ago... and I've worn it once. Shane doesn't like it, but he can't give me a specific reason as to why not. I'm not sure I can pull off this look, though... I think it makes me look too young. I mean, I already look underage... I don't need to give myself any more help in looking like a 14-year-old.

How would you describe your style? Do you follow the latest fashion trends? Do you like these headbands with the attached flowers?

maybe I shouldn't read in the bath anymore...

Apparently my relaxing bubble bath was too relaxing... I dropped my book in the tub.

And for those of you who know how much I cherish my beloved books, you'll know just how devastated I am...

Sniff.

It worked!

Looks like their foolproof plan really was, well, foolproof!

It started "spitting" snow yesterday just before noon... which was about the time I got a phone call from Hannah's teacher, letting me know school was being dismissed early.

Of course, as soon as we got home the girls insisted on playing outside. Although there wasn't much snow to actually play with...

A few hours later bigger, fatter flakes began to fall. Hannah and Michaela headed out again to enjoy what snow there was...

(this photo is a few hours after the 1st one... not much difference!)

Shane made it home safely last night, although he said there were a few places where he slid on ice. And he almost couldn't make it up our driveway!

School has been cancelled for today... in fact, the girls are outside at this moment. They asked if they could go outside "before the snow melts away!", but I won't let them out for very long. The current temp is just 17 degrees... and with the wind chill factored in, it feels like only 3! I took a quick look at the forecast... we may even get more snow this evening.

Anyone else get hit with some winter weather?

Thursday, January 7, 2010

Their plan is foolproof.

video

In case you couldn't tell what they are saying, my girls have a surefire way to make it snow:

Step 1: wear your pajamas inside-out

Step 2: do the "snow dance"

Step 3: flush an ice cube down the toilet

The forecast is calling for the white stuff to start sometime this afternoon.

We'll see just how foolproof this plan really is...

brrrrr!

The temperature this morning when I took the girls to school:

And it wasn't much better (by my standards, at least) this afternoon when I picked them up:

Makes me want to give Jack Frost a swift kick right to his snowballs...

Day 5

The countdown is on.

Four weeks from today, the final season of Lost... one of the finest hours on television... will premiere.

Forgive me, I need a moment... for whilst I'm anxiously awaiting the return of one of my favorite TV shows of all time, I'm also in a state of despair and despondency that one of my favorite TV shows of all time is coming to an end...

Sigh.

I received all 5 seasons of Lost for Christmas... and I'm thinking of doing my own "Lost marathon" and watch every episode, from the beginning, before the final season begins.

On February 2nd.

Which is just four weeks from today.

Hearing of my intentions, Shane had this to say:

Shane: "You want to watch all 5 seasons... in less than 30 days?"

Me: "Yeah."

{Shane picks up the DVD cases, and looks at the back of each one}

Shane: "You do realize there's roughly 75 hours worth of episodes to watch..."

Me: "Ok..."

Shane: "Nice knowing ya."

Day 4

(this may be the only picture I take of Izzie all year, as she was a most uncooperative subject)

Day Trippin'

Way back in October during the girls' Fall Break, we took Hannah and Michaela to the Biltmore Estate for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised at how much the girls enjoyed visiting the house... since that trip went so well, we told Hannah and Michaela that we'd come back during Christmas.

A few days after our visit in October, a stretch of I-40 (the interstate that runs into Asheville, NC) was closed due to a massive rock slide.

No problem, we thought, we'll just take Hwy 64 around the rock slide and get back on I-40.

One week later, Hwy 64 closed due to... a massive rock slide.

Some might take that as an omen that we should just stay home...

But the determined fools travelers we are, we headed to Asheville (at o'dark thirty, I might add) the day before Christmas Eve.

Asheville was hit with a big snowstorm the weekend before our visit... we were surprised to find most of it still on the ground when we got there.

We made it to the Biltmore around 11, just in time for a yummy lunch at the Stable Cafe...

After we ate, it was time to tour the house...

We learned from one of the guides that once you're done touring the house (and just the house... not including the gardens or winery or farm...), you've walked a mile and a half!

This piece of news was just what Michaela wanted to hear...

Clearly.

worth a thousand words

Not only did I pick out my best posts of 2009, I also looked for my favorite photos from the last 12 months...

Michelle has inspired me to start my own "picture a day project" for 2010. My goal is to grab my camera and take at least one photo each day this year. I'm not sure how I'll post the pics (daily? weekly? monthly?) or if I'll post them at all.

But here's my first photo of the new year... I took it earlier this evening, while Michaela and I were playing around in the living room...

Best Nuts O' the Bunch

Some of my favorite posts:

About Me

everything you wanted to know, but were too afraid to ask:
  • I've been a SAHM since June 2007. And this whole "mommy" gig? Hands down, the toughest job I've ever had.
  • I'm a Yankee by birth, a Southerner by choice.
  • I love all things Jane Austen.
  • Daniel Craig is my movie-boyfriend.
  • I'm addicted to carbs, Coca-Cola and most reality TV.
  • I drink the Kool-Aid that is Lost. And anyone who doesn't is missing out on one of the finest hours of television.
  • I am a habitual night owl.
  • Daily naps are my guilty pleasure.
  • I firmly believe a girl can never have too many handbags. Or shoes.

out with the old, in with the new

It may be the antidepressants talking, but I'm feeling somewhat optimistic about 2010

Happy New Year!
