When I announced my participation in this year's Everything Austen Challenge, there were quite a few comments of utter disbelief over the fact I've never seen "Bridget Jones's Diary"!
My BFF sought to remedy the situation... so a few weeks ago I headed over to Angie's for an afternoon of movie-watching.
Even thought I hadn't seen the movie before (nor had I read the book it's based on), I did know it was a retelling (of sorts) of Austen's Pride and Prejudice. And I knew the character played by Colin Firth was named Darcy.
What I didn't know was how much I would like this movie! I'm not much of a Renee Zellweger fan, but thought she played the character well... not only with a believable British accent, but in the way her character came across as someone who is very down-to-earth, though somewhat ridiculous. Colin Firth and Hugh Grant were fabulous, as well (tough choice as to which one is dreamier)
Now after watching the movie, I'm adding the book to my "to read" list!
Have you seen Bridget Jones's Diary? Read the book? Who do you prefer: Colin Firth or Hugh Grant?

19 Nutty Buddies Have Something To Say:
I have seen the movie. And read the book. The book is great. There is a sequel - The Edge of Reason. The movie was okay - but I thought the book was absolutely hilarious. You need to read them both!
Colin Firth HANDS DOWN! I love that movie it and it's sequel are movies I can watch over and over again.
Um, neither. Just ick.
I have read the book, and seen both the original movie and The Edge of Reason. I love Colin Firth, and prefer him! Lol. I suppose it's rather simple but you have to admit Hugh Grant's naughty boy character is quite attractive, right up until the half naked women in the bathroom....
My 2c :)
Read the book? Yes and liked it.
Seen the movie? No. Can't stand the squinty eyed freak.
Hugh Grant all the way.
I have seen this movie and I see it over and over again because I really like it. Okay, you got me....I watch it because I absolutely L o v e Colin Firth. I could just watch him breathe. It's a sickness you know?
Hands Down Colin Firth - but I'm a sucker for him! I really liked the first movie - the sequel was okay. The books however... much better than either movie. I'm sad that I lost them in my move. =(
I love the movie. Love Colin Firth.
My only beef is that they constantly talk about how "chubby" she is. Meanwhile she's like a size 6. Bugs me.
Colin!! I love the movie and book. The sequel not so much. Did I hear about a third coming soon?
So glad I got to share your first BJD experience! I haven't read either of the books, but have seen both movies several times. And Hugh Grant, hands down, every single time. Le sigh.
It's been a long time since I saw the movie, but I remember laughing out loud a LOT.
Never did read the book. And once I've seen the movie, I have a hard time reading the book...
Love the book, love the movie, love Colin Firth. I loved Hugh Grant before he cut all his hair off. Grow back the floppy hair (ala "Notting Hill") and I'd be back to loving him... not as much as Colin, though.
No question - Colin Firth. As far as BJD's concerned, love the books, love the movies...love the fanfics! {eg}
Glad you enjoyed the film. I watched it a long time ago and thought it absolutely hilarious - I should get around to reading the book. Didn't enjoy The Edge of Reason film so much I think. Definitely Colin Firth for me.!
I've read the book and watched the movie multiple times. Love them both for different reasons. You need to read the book. Hilarious.
And Colin Firth all the way! Yummy.
Books - Good
Movies - Good - 2nd one ok
Colin Firth.
I have adored him since Circle of Friends which came out in... hm... gotta go look that up...
1995. Same time as Pride & Prejudice was made.
this movie was so cute - then I had to immediately read the book and thought it was even funnier. and colin firth has my heart. have you seen love actually?
Colin Firth hands down! He was very dreamy in P&P too...
I haven't read either of the books but loved the movies. Maybe I should add them to my Austen Challenge.
I love Renee Zellweger in this movie!
