I am STILL hungover...

Boy... you SITStas sure know how to show a girl a good time!

Yesterday morning, I was tipsy before I even took my kids to school.

By noon, I was forgoing the glass and just swiggin' straight from the bottle.

Shane came home from work to find me three sheets to the wind.

I highly recommend getting drunk on comment-love!

Heather and Tiffany: you ladies seriously rock!  Thank you for all the work you put into SITS!

And to all my SITStas, I can't wait to return the comment-love and get to know you all better!

But first, I think it's time for one more round.  Let me just signal my cabana boy...

Just call me "The Dog Whisperer"

My sister is currently spending a few days in San Antonio... while she's away, getting spa treatments and shopping... I'm dog-sitting for her.

Lucky me.

(I'm kidding, Heather... I'm kidding!)

We're dog-sitting "the boys"... Keegan and Riley.  And so far, they've behaved better than my own dog!  Which is sad, in a way...

Anyhoo, the girls are loving having the dogs here for a few days!

Hannah and Keegan

Michaela and Riley

Riley, aka "Funny Face" (he was born with a cleft palette)

I think Keegan misses Heather...

just a little bit...

Wanna Swap?

I've been thinking about doing this for awhile now... and there's no time like the present, right?

So, here goes...

I'm hosting my first swap!

If you are interested in participating, comment here to let me know.  Then, to verify your commitment to the swap, send an email to nuthouseshannon{at}gmail{dot}com with the following info:
  • your name
  • your mailing address
  • your blog name and blog address
  • an area of the country that you've never been to but would like to visit
My intention is to match partners by where they live and where they'd like to visit.  For example, Blogger A lives in Tennessee and would like to visit New England.  She could be matched with Blogger B, who lives in Maine.  BUT, this doesn't mean that Blogger B would necessarily be matched back with Blogger A.  Make sense?

Now, as for what goodies to send... this is completely up to you, but the items you send should pertain to areas of interest from your hometown.  To give another example, I could send my swap partner items from the Tennessee Aquarium or the Chattanooga Choo Choo.

The Rules:
  • Entries for this swap will not be accepted after 11:59 p.m. (EST), May 6th.
  • Since this is my 1st time hosting a swap, I've decided to open this up to U.S. bloggers only (I apologize for any inconvenience!)
  • You will be notified by email of your partner's info no later than May 9th.  You will only be told the identity of the person you are to ship to...  you won't know who got your name until you receive their package!
  • Again, what you send is entirely up to you... I only ask that you spend no more than $30 but at least $20 (and this does not include shipping costs).
  • Mail your package no later than June 6th.  This gives you four weeks from the time you get your partner's info to the time you need to ship your package.
  • Please do not sign up for the swap with the intention of receiving a package and not sending one!
  • When June 6th gets here and packages start being delivered, I'll put up a post with a Mr. Linky... blog about your goodies and link up so everyone can see what you got!
  • And the last rule is... BE CREATIVE & HAVE FUN!

Also, feel free to grab the button and blog about the swap!  The person who does this and refers the most people to join us will receive a special package from me!  Just make sure to tell your readers to let me know who sent them.

hometown swap button

I think (and hope!) this will be lots of fun for everyone!  Please don't hesitate to comment or send me an email with any questions you might have.

Now, sign up!

Look What I Got!

First, I want to thank everyone for the well-wishes!  I was able to see the doctor this morning... and was told I presented "classic, textbook migraine symptoms".  I was given some migraine medication that I think will work {keeping my fingers crossed}.

But here's something to make me feel better... my goodies from Lilly arrived!  Just look at what I won:

A close-up of my loot: Lacoste perfume (smells wonderful!), Estee Lauder goodies (including lipstick, eyeshadow, nail polish...), some Bath & Body Works/ American Girl spa products, and a Relay for Life cookbook (which I've just flipped through and have already found about 7 recipes I can't wait to try!)...

My girls enjoyed a night of pampering... bubble baths and facials!

If you aren't familiar with Lilly's blog... her husband, Roy, is currently battling cancer.  Lilly has been hosting giveaways to raise money for cancer research, and she has one more fabulous giveaway here!  This last giveaway ends Saturday... so get over there and enter NOW!

To My Favorite Texas Livin'-Pink Cowgirl Hat Wearin'-Mommy Bloggin' Gal

Roses are red,
Violets are blue.
Happy Birthday, Rhea!
Happy Birthday to you!

Roses are red,
Violets are blue.
There's no one else
quite like you!

Roses are red,
Violets are blue.
You write of your crazy dreams,
and post pics of cow poo!

Roses are red,
Violets are blue.
I hope on this day
all your wishes come true!

I Need My Head Examined

Saturday was one of those perfect days: clear, blue skies, a sunny 74 degrees, and the occasional warm breeze.  Just one of those days where you want to get outside and enjoy the sunshine.

Alas, here is how I spent my Saturday:

(no, that isn't me... just some random Google image)

I spent almost 6 hours cocooned in my bed... under the covers, with a pillow over my eyes.  Suffering from what I assume to be a migraine.  I don't know this for sure, as I've not been to a doctor about my headaches.  But seeing as how this was my 2nd "migraine" in a week (and the other one lasted 2 days), I think it's about time for me to see a doctor.  In fact, when I emerged from my darkened bedroom Saturday afternoon, Shane handed me a list of in-network doctors to choose from.

So on my agenda today is to call one of these docs and schedule an appointment.  Hopefully, out of this list, one of them is accepting new patients... and can see me soon.  Because I seriously don't know how much more of this I can take...

Who fluffed?

Blog Farts – noun. Def: Crappy ideas that are too short to make a real blog post, but when combined, join forces to make one unified, albeit half assed, post. see also: memes, surveys.

  • Can someone please explain this to me: my girls love to set the table for dinner.  They'd do it every night... but ask them to clean their rooms or playroom... whining and wailing ensue.  I don't get it.

  • Another thing I don't get... I was flipping through channels on the TV the other night and noticed "Dog, the Bounty Hunter" was on.  And it was a new episode!  How is this show still on the air?!

  • Maybe it's time to rethink my "mommy uniform" of velour tracksuits, yoga pants and hoodies... anytime my kids see me in a pair of jeans, they immediately ask, "Where are you going?"

  • If you haven't already, y'all should check out this new blog, In Three Words.  Three times a week (Mon, Wed & Fri) a question is posed... and you're to leave your answer or thoughts in just three words.  Today's entry is "something you crave".  My answer... peace. and. quiet.

  • My mother-in-law sometimes refers to farts as "fluffs"... hence the post title.

What are your plans for the weekend?  Anything fun or exciting?  Whatever your plans are, hope your weekend is a good one!

Name That Tune

I think I have a pretty eclectic taste in music.  My likes range from oldies to Top 40 hits... classical to alternative.  Glance at my CD collection and you'll find Josh Groban, The Police, Puccini, Green Day and the original Broadway cast recording of "Miss Saigon" ...all on the same shelf.

Smoochiefrog did a Lyrics Quiz awhile back... and I thought it would be fun to do one here.

With my iPod on shuffle mode, here are lyrics of the first 20 songs that played (I've also added in parenthesis the genre of music the song is, according to iTunes).  All you have to do is guess the title of the song AND the artist/group.  When someone gets it right, I'll strike through the lyrics.

  1. I want to walk with you on a cloudy day, in fields where the yellow grass grows knee high (vocal)  Michelle knows this is "Come Away With Me" by Norah Jones
  2. Tonight I'll sing my songs again, I'll play the game and pretend (folk)  Kori got it right!  "Homeward Bound" by Simon & Garfunkel
  3. Hear the sound of the falling rain, coming down like an Armageddon plague (alternative)
  4. Well by now I'm getting all bothered and hot, when he kissed my mouth he really hit the spot (pop) Kori correctly guessed Christina Aguilera's "Candyman"
  5. My mama went off and left him, she wanted more from life than he could give (pop)  CaraBee was able to get the song and artist on this one... "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman
  6. It's a thief in the night to come and grab you, It can creep up inside and consume you (pop)  Laura is correct... "Disturbia" by Rihanna
  7. I found God on the corner of 1st and Amistad, where the west was all but won (rock)  Correct answer from Brandy... "You Found Me" by The Fray
  8. Everybody wants to be loved, well I can hear you (easy listening)
  9. Now I don't mean to bother you but I'm in distress, there's danger of me losing all of my happiness (R&B)  Yay!  Aubrey got this one right... "Cupid" by Sam Cooke (oh, how I love me some Sam Cooke)
  10. Well you done done done me and you but I felt it, I tried to be chill but you're so hot that I melted (pop)  Another correct answer from Laura... "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz
  11. Love, I get so lost, sometimes, days pass and this emptiness fills my heart (rock)  One of my favorite songs... Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes"... guessed correctly by Smoochiefrog
  12. If he loved you like I loved you, I would walk away in shame, I'd move town, I'd change my name (rock)  Kori is correct again... "When We Dance" by Sting
  13. Like two ships passing in the night we're gone, only the moon and the stars in the sky did know (rock)  Correct guess from Missy... "Sailed On" by Landon Pigg
  14. I didn't hear what you were saying, I live on raw emotion baby (alternative)  Brandy is right, again... Maroon 5's "Wake Up Call"
  15. And so it is, just like you said it would be, life goes easy on me most of the time (folk)  Lindsay got this one right!  It's "The Blower's Daughter" by Damien Rice
  16. I tried to call you before but I lost my nerve, I tried my imagination but I was disturbed (pop)  Bylinda&James guessed correctly... "867-5309 (Jenny) by Tommy Tutone
  17. Steady feet don't fail me now, gonna run 'til you can't walk (rock)
  18. Come out, come out, no use in hiding, come now, come now can you not see? (rock)
  19. How did we get here, I used to know you so well (alternative)
  20. I resolved to call her up a thousand times a day, and ask her if she'll marry me in some old-fashioned way (rock)  Jo-Jo is correct... "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" by The Police (aka, The Greatest Rock Band EVER)

No Googling allowed!  How many can you get right without having to look up the lyrics?

And I'm sorry, but there's no prize... this quiz is just for fun!

Good luck!  Now, impress me with your musical knowledge...

It's funny now... but in a few years? Notsomuch...

My youngest daughter is quite a pistol... I don't know where she comes up with the things she says.

  • Yesterday evening, H looked out the window and saw Shane mowing the backyard.  She asked, "Momma, when are you ever going to mow the yard?"  Before I could even answer, M piped up with: "She doesn't need to... that's what she has a husband for."

  • Once, when I mentioned to M she needed to adjust her attitude, her reply was, "Well, you should be glad I'm not a teenager yet!"

  • Shane wanted M to help him empty the dishwasher.  She actually had the nerve to say, "Get your wife to do it."

What am I going to do with this child?!  At least she's good for a laugh, right?

She still has some learnin' to do...

My oldest girl has many aspirations for when she grows up... she'd like to be a teacher, veterinarian, zookeeper, fashion designer or photographer.

Yesterday, we went out for lunch with Shane's family.  While we waited for our food to arrive, I thought I'd encourage H's passion for photography by letting her use my camera and take some pictures of us.

Here is one she took of me, whilst I was stuffing my face enjoying a yummy corn muffin.

First rule of thumb: make sure your thumb (and other digits) are out of the way before snapping the picture!

Who cut the cheese?

Blog Fartsnoun. Def: Crappy ideas that are too short to make a real blog post, but when combined, join forces to make one unified, albeit half assed, post. see also: memes, surveys.

  • I made the mistake of explaining to H what a "wet willie" is... now she won't stop trying to give me one.
  • Teaching my girls to moon their father... probably not one of my finer mothering moments.
  • 29 school days left until summer vacation (not that I'm keeping track or anything...)
  • Speaking of which, the girls are out of school today for a "spring holiday".  When did the school system start having trouble with saying "Good Friday"?  I don't remember it being called a "spring holiday" last year...
  • Woke up this morning to the sound of thunder and rain... I love to listen to a good storm, but the rain needs to stop soon... I've got places to go and people to see today!  And I don't want to schlep around town in the rain!

I wonder how many kooky keywords this post is going to produce!

Have a Happy Easter and a great weekend!

Kooky Keywords

Google Analytics lets you track all sorts of things about your blog... how many page views you have, the average amount of time a person spends on your blog and where they come from, etc.  But my reason for using Google Analytics is for the Keyword searches.

(for anyone who doesn't know, Google Analytics will show you the words or phrases people "googled" and got directed to your blog... it's hilarious, yet a bit frightening, to see just how people out there on the 'net find your blog)

Here are just a few recent keywords in which Google directed people to my NutHouse:

I'm 32 he's 21 (kudos to you!)

nuthouse girl naked (sorry, but that's something you will never see here!)

I eat but my stomach still growls (alas, this happens to me, too... sigh)

why have carrie got a broken arm (I don't know... why have she?)

animal house (why, yes... it is)

angie's random rant (I don't remember Angie ever ranting on my blog... but she can if she wants to!)

Have you ever used Google Analytics?  What's the oddest keyword search that someone has Googled and they've landed at your blog?

Like Father, Like Daughter

(well, one of them anyway...)

I confess... when my girls were younger, I sometimes wondered if Shane was ever a tiny bit sad that we didn't have a boy.  Not that he ever said such a thing, or even hinted at it... but I'd wonder if he wished for a son that he could take fishing and camping, or that he could cheer on at Little League games.

I know he is truly proud of his two daughters and loves them more than anything... but now that H is older, I am glad she shares her dad's love of the outdoors (M... notsomuch.  She's not outdoorsy... just like her mama)

This past Saturday, Shane and H took advantage of the nice weather and went hiking at Lula Lake (a land trust open to the public on the first and last Saturdays of the month).

(Yes, Lula!... there is such a place as Lula Lake!  And it's located in GEORGIA!)

I'm sure Shane will be posting pictures of their outing on his blog, but here is one of him and H, standing at the bottom of Lula Falls...

I did ask M if she wanted to go with Shane and H, but she said no.  When I asked her why not, she replied, "I don't like walking."

I'm telling you, this kid is 100% mine.

Maybe I Really Should Live on a Farm...

We all know kids say the darnedest things...

But I can honestly say, I never once thought I would  hear my 6-year-old ask:

"Momma, why are there horses outside my window?"

No, your eyes did not deceive you... you read correctly.  I even have the photographic proof:

Michaela stayed home from school today.  While in her room earlier this morning, she happened to look out her window... and saw a horse in our front yard.  In fact, there were four horses in our yard.

Seriously.  Four horses.  In my front yard.

By the time I grabbed the camera, they were on the move... I snapped this picture looking out my kitchen window:

And then I made way to the back deck to find these beauties in my backyard, munching on my grass, like it was totally normal:

I had to call Shane at work (Me: "Dude, you are not going to believe this...")  While I was on the phone with him, a police cruiser drove by.  I don't know if someone else in the neighborhood called the police, or if the officer just happened to be on patrol (and if the officer was just on his routine patrol, I can't imagine what ran through his mind when he saw four horses where they shouldn't be!)

(I also had to call my pal Angie... to tell her it's reasons like this she needs to move out of the city limits and into the sticks with me)

By the time the officers (three in all) got a hold of the owners, the horses had made their way to the backyard of the house behind mine:

Just outside the entrance to my subdivision is a pasture where these horses are kept.  Here's the owner, leading his horses back home where they belong:

I'm just glad one of the horses didn't leave a "gift" on my lawn, if you know what I'm sayin'...

First there was a rogue rooster in my yard... then the baby goats... now horses.  I'm afraid to ask... what's next?!

Sleeping Beauties

I'm a tad late, but I wanted to share one of my favorite pics for Candid Carrie's Friday's Foto Finish Fiesta.  It's (yet) another photo featuring my sister:

Aren't they sweet?

This photo was taken the day M was born (February 19, 2003).  When my midwife determined it was time that I start pushing, Heather took H into the hallway outside my birthing suite.  They fell asleep while watching a movie on Heather's laptop.  I don't remember what movie it was... or who took the picture.  It's not even the greatest of photos... but I love it.

Have a great weekend, y'all!

Home Sweet Home

My husband has lived in the Chattanooga area his entire life.  Born and raised here.

On the other hand, I have lived in four different states: Maryland, Michigan, Alabama and Tennessee.

Born in Washington, D.C., I spent the first two years of my life in Takoma Park, Maryland (a suburb of our nation's capital).  My family (which at the time consisted of my dad, mom, little brother and myself) then moved to Jackson, Michigan, into this house...

It's one of the oldest farmhouses in Jackson County and was already about 100 years old when we moved into it... and that was in 1978!  My little sister was born about six months after we moved here.  We spent 8 years at 1004 South West Avenue... I loved this house.  I have great memories from our time in Jackson... playing in our huge backyard, riding our big wheels in the driveway and then our bikes around the block as we got older, going trick-or-treating in the neighborhood on Halloween, 4th of July picnics in the park...

In July 1986, my dad's job took us to Huntsville, Alabama.  We stayed there only a year...

I really don't have much to say about our time in Alabama!  It was such a short time there... and I was miserable.  I missed my friends from Michigan too much.

Anyway, it was August 1987 when we moved to Tennessee...

This is the house I've lived the longest in (so far)... I spent 10 years calling this house "home".  I consider this to be the house I grew up in.  My mom still lives here.

Shane and I married in 1997 and lived in an apartment for two years.  We became first time home owners in 1999 when we bought this tiny house...

and I mean tiny... I think it was just barely 1000 sq ft!  We lived in this matchbox for three and a half years.  Small as it was, this house will have a special place in my heart, as it is the house we brought our daughters home to after they were born.

In 2003 we moved into our current house...

M was six months old and H was 2... we had quickly outgrown our first little house and needed something bigger.  When Shane and I were house hunting, I knew I wanted three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a dining room... and if we could get a some sort of 4th bedroom or other separate space to use for the girls' playroom, that would be icing on the cake.  Luckily, we found just what we were looking for!  Our house has a finished basement (something not very common down here in the South) that consists of a den and the much-needed playroom!  We also have one of the largest lots in the neighborhood, so the girls have a great backyard to play in.

I'm not sure how much longer we will be in this house.  Not that we have plans to move any time soon.  But when we do look for another (bigger) house, I already have my list of wants and wishes going!

How about you?  Have you lived in the same area your entire life?  Or have you moved around?

My inspiration for this post came from my bloggy buddy, Nikki... she did her own parade of homes... I've shown mine... now feel free to show yours!

Meet the Family

I've mentioned my sister a lot lately here on my blog... but I've realized I have never formally introduced her to my faithful readers.  So, for this inaugural installment of "Meet the Family", let me present:

my little sister, Heather

October 2008

Heather is two and a half years younger than I am... my lil' sis will be celebrating her (gasp!) 30th birthday later this month!  She lives in Nashville, where she works as an Account Manager for the state's largest health insurance company.  She's passionate about animals (3 dogs and 4 cats, remember?), Starbucks and shoes.  And her nieces and nephew, of course!

with The Boy and H, December 2002

Heather and M, December 2003

...and with M in December 2007

on the Scrambler at Lake Winnie, 2007

...and again in 2008!

The girl changes hairstyles (and color!) like most people change their socks!

Growing up, I wouldn't say Heather and I were close.  You know how little sisters are... always wanting to hang around their big sister and her friends... naturally I found her annoying.  I'd say more often than not, we were at odds with each other.

But as we've grown older, we've also grown closer.  My annoying little sister isn't so annoying anymore.  While she might not always agree with me, I know she'll always have my back.

My little sister has become my best friend.

And I love her more than my luggage.
