We all know kids say the darnedest things...
But I can honestly say, I never once thought I would hear my 6-year-old ask:
"Momma, why are there horses outside my window?"
No, your eyes did not deceive you... you read correctly. I even have the photographic proof:
Michaela stayed home from school today. While in her room earlier this morning, she happened to look out her window... and saw a horse in our front yard. In fact, there were four horses in our yard.
Seriously. Four horses. In my front yard.
By the time I grabbed the camera, they were on the move... I snapped this picture looking out my kitchen window:
And then I made way to the back deck to find these beauties in my backyard, munching on my grass, like it was totally normal:
I had to call Shane at work (Me: "Dude, you are not going to believe this...") While I was on the phone with him, a police cruiser drove by. I don't know if someone else in the neighborhood called the police, or if the officer just happened to be on patrol (and if the officer was just on his routine patrol, I can't imagine what ran through his mind when he saw four horses where they shouldn't be!)
(I also had to call my pal Angie... to tell her it's reasons like this she needs to move out of the city limits and into the sticks with me)
By the time the officers (three in all) got a hold of the owners, the horses had made their way to the backyard of the house behind mine:
Just outside the entrance to my subdivision is a pasture where these horses are kept. Here's the owner, leading his horses back home where they belong:
I'm just glad one of the horses didn't leave a "gift" on my lawn, if you know what I'm sayin'...
First there was a rogue rooster in my yard... then the baby goats... now horses. I'm afraid to ask... what's next?!

155 Nutty Buddies Have Something To Say:
Your home must have some sweet grass for all the animals who come to hang out there! Imagine what the horses might have been thinking about their little adventure!
there's never a dull moment at your house... lol.... but how cool that must've been for your child!!!
I'm laying odds that the next farm animal that shows up is bovine. And I had better be the first call when that happens. :-)
(still laughing about the equine adventures)
Too funny.
That is too funny!
That is so bizarre!!! Only in Tennessee. ;)
I would be worried because the animals are getting bigger with each occurance!! Hehehe...possibly a cow next time??? We have that happen all the time around here but then again we live in the boondocks!
I want to live where you live. The kids would love it!!!!
Do you have a livestock homing beacon or something?
And if the size keeps going in this direction...I'd start getting nervous if there is a circus coming to town!
They were just going for a little walk in the "neigh"borhood. LOL
Lucky duck. All I get are rats, squirrels and turtles.
I see other houses. And curbed streets. Girl, that's not the sticks. Come out here and see what living in the sticks truly is!
Oh my gosh! My daughter would have been getting ready and on her way out the door to ride them when she told me about it!
I really wish I lived where you live! I thought the gotas were good--now this!!
That is too funny! I can't believe all the random animals that end up in your yard... crazy!
I'm leaning towards pigs for your next adventure! :)
Hmmmm...roosters, goats and horses...three signs of the apocalypse:-)
Oh lucky you...your own version of Pioneer Woman! :) lol!
That's just cool! I wish that happened at my house! Your photos are fabulous!
psst...huge giveaway up at my bloggy!
OMG first goats and now horses???
Oh I can't wait to see what's next, I'm betting sheep!!
How awesome!! All we get are squirrels and the occasional bunny. Glad they didn't leave you any gifts. That would have been pretty gross!
thats great! my girls would have loved it. we live near a horse ranch and we see them all the time, but to have them in your yard....thats cool
oh that is awesome what pretty horses!
Holy cow! I want to wake up to horses in my yard! As long as I'm lucky like you and they don't poop everywhere.
Oh my girls would have gone crazy if they saw the horses in the front yard!
That is just crazy! I'm glad you had a camera available, because you don't get those kinds of shots often.
Old McShannon had a farm...LOL
Love it. I know I can't wait to see what pops up next!
LOL! That is too funny! I'm glad they made their way back home.
Shannon...."horse-ing" around!
How fun to wake up to a farm!
If you hadn't had picture proof, it would have been hard to believe!
THanks for sharing.....what fun!
♥,Lilly
That is so crazy! I can't imagine looking out the window and seeing a herd of horses! It would be especially weird because I live in a heavily populated area, but still.
That's just crazy! Glad they didn't leave any presents in the yard :)
That is so funny! Lucky that guy found them, that would suck, they're expensive!!
PS - LOVING your neighborhood. It looks beautiful there!
Hey the gift would have been FREE fertilizer!!! I love how the horses just follow him home like bad children...that is the cutest thing!
OMG, I would have peed myself with glee!!!!!!!!!! That is the coolest thing ever!!!!!!! I wanna live near you! Hey, maybe next you'll get some cute little piggies!!
Justine :o )
I always have a horse in my backyard. We let our neighbor use our "valley" for his horse and he keeps it mowed.
Sounds fair to me.
Awesome....just throw a saddle on them and go......you mean you don't have saddles just laying around?
How cool would that be though? They are really beautiful! I'm glad they were okay and didn't spooked or hit by a car or anything.
Don't you just love it when life throws you a surprise!!!
That's pretty cool! I grew up in the country so around lots of animals, but it's always fun to see animals romping around in the yard!
Oh my word I would have LOVED THAT!
Though I would have gone out to pet them haha :)
That sort of happened to us too. My dog was barking and I went to see what she was barking at and there was a horse in my driveway.
I even posted about it....check it out if you want! :)
http://withanangelonmyshoulder.blogspot.com/2008/05/just-about-most-exciting-thing-ever.html
cool! i've never once had a horse... or a rooster... or a goat... in my front yard!
That's awesome! I definitely miss a lot now that I live in an urban area :-(
Aww, I miss seeing horses!! Like you, I used to live near a livery, and every now and then, a horse would venture into our backyard. Now, I live smack-bang in the middle of a city and I miss the randomness of living further out!
xx
Oh wow - I don't know what I would do if there were horses in my yard! And judging by those pictures you don't live so far in the sticks that this is a normal thing! LOL
Wow! My son would have been so excited! Definitely a good reason to move out to the sticks!
that sounds like fun to me.
Wow! I would definitely be calling everyone I know! I can't imagine how you kept your daughter inside though-Monkey would have been out of his mind to try to get to the horses and feed them cheerios (which he believes to be the food that all animals enjoy).
hahaha! that's insane! the horses were so cute. your neighbors owe you and your family a couple rides for that one.
LOL I DO live on a farm and renegade animals show up here all the time. The most interesting was an escaped Emu!
Well at least they were good guests right? Horse apple's are some pretty potent things!
Oh my gosh that is random! Good job getting pics!
Stopping by from SITS!
You live in a lovely semi rural area, nice shots!
what a fun sight!
Wow! How lucky that Michaela was home to see that. I'm sure that was pretty magical to a little girl.
Oh what fun! We do live out in the sticks and we'll see a run away cow every now and then. The horses pretty much stay put in their pens.
I wish I lived where you do. My girls would have LOVED to see that in their yard!
Ha! It really did look funny to see them next to your swing set! Happy sits:)
Omgosh, my girls would have LOVED to wake up and see them!
Haha, that's too funny! I love horses, but I'd hate it too if they had left me gifts!
Wow! We had horses in the yard of our rental home in the Outer Banks, but I think that's a little different. :-)
Hysterical!
How about coyotes?? We get those and they aren't quite as pretty as horsies! How fun! :)
LOL
The closest thing we have to animals in our yard is moles. They aren't as cool. :)
Crazy things can happen when ya live outside the 'city' limits!
What a nice surprise! At least they were pretty... could've been skunks, ya know?
That's one of those moments that you'll never forget!
ha! I love your post label for this.."couldn't make this up if I tried." It's true. I live just outside boston and we get coyotes...but they are pretty skiddish and don't have big hooves to dig up the grass! I'm glad they didn't leave you an surprises.
haha! i love when things like that happen! :)
happy SITS day!
That is something you do not see everyday.
If that ever happened to us, my hubby would probably have a heart attack since he's afraid of horses...we're still working on that, because at some point we will own some horses...but we'll try to keep them out of your yard! ;)
Happy SITS Day! :)
Good times. Better horses than bears, I guess.
How funny! I would have thought she was hallucinating from sickness!
How funny! When I was younger, our horses used to get out all the time. One of them had figured out how to open the gate. But then again, we lived in the country.
This post is good enough for two comments...LOL!
Hey if the horses didn't show up what would you have blogged about that day? :)
You know the saying....The grass is always greener.
I bet you guys were freaking out at first--glad you got the pics!!
Happy SITS day!
Maybe I'm just partial to horses, but this is like the best day ever!
Oh they're so pretty! I'm glad they weren't hit by a car or anything. It looks like you have a lovely yard.
What an exciting day! I've seen random deer in people's yards, but horses? That was first. Thank you for sharing!
We found a nasty muskrat in our window well a few weeks ago. ICKY I'd prefer the horse and even the poo over rat like critters!
Oh my! There's so many houses around--who has the room to put up all those horses?!
How fun!!!
Unbelievable, but very pastoral!
That reminds me of Zumanji, except for less creepy. I really don't like that movie.
that's cute. I was about to say at least they weren't goats, but then I see it looks like the goats already passed through.
That's hilarious. I'm glad you were able to snap some pictures.
I bet those horses were laughing to themselves for being so sneaky. Yes, horses laugh.
wow, you got to live my lifelong dream as a child!
delilah at www.unrulyhelpmeet.com
happy sits day!
I love it! Never a dull moment!
Love the story! I had horses in my back yard a couple of weeks ago. I didn't actually catch them in my yard but I found evidence when I mowed. Big rivets from their big feet and a nice pile of poo! YIKES!
Ha-ha, that would take quite the doggie bag to pick up horse poop.
Hilarious post.
Congrats on being FB - hope you enjoy your day!
HAPPY SITS DAY!
I have to say, that's pretty friggin cool. I'd probably freak but looking out your window to see that would be awesome!
That's awesome! I would love to have visiting animals like that.
I'd freak! We looked up one day to see about 4 deer in our front yard. We are not in a deer area, but there they were.
I'd love to wake up and find horses in my yard!! sounds like you live in a fun neighborhood lol.
Dropping by to welcome you to SITS!
oops I meant Happy SITS Day! I've been welcoming blogs all day, I guess I got stuck in the groove lol.
That just made me really laugh!! that is so funny...i would have loved to have seen the police officer's faces...like...what are THEY going to do?? LOL!!
Dropping by from SITS. If this happened at my house I would see it as a sign that I needed to have more animals, but I have always wanted to keep anything that entered my yard LOL. How far away is this farm with the rogue animals? Seems like they need a better fence, huh?
Eeeew. A gift would have been ginormous, I'll bet.
How funny is it that so many of our minds right away jumped to the potential "gift!"
What fun...wayward horses. Maybe next you'll have something exotic! A Zebra maybe?
that's so cool. My kids would have loved it. Every time we drive by a farm with horses, they scream HORSE, HORSE, HORSE.
Happy sits day! ;)
Thank God they were rounded up before going the wrong direction and into the path of a vehicle! We live down the road from horses too and have had this happen. Early on a foggy morning, while waiting for the kids' bus to arrive, comes a horse out of the mist...as if he owns the road...thank God he made it back home safely as well. :o)
Congrats on your SITS day!
My son is sitting next to me and is SO jealous!
Too funny!
That's so cool for your girl- it probably made her day! LOL! Life is definately interesting!
From a fellow girl in the sticks, I so understand! Last year I looked out the window to see a cow in my back yard. This is in addition to the many wild creatures seen out there every day.
Yah, gift from them would not be a very enjoyable one!
What an exciting event that you got to enjoy though!
My kids would be in heaven! My daughter just asked this morning if I could by her a horse for the back yard!
I do live on a Farm and the horses across the street come to visit us all the time. But they eat my hay. I don't like that. I send Abby out to butt them but she is afraid of the horses...they are sooooo big.
I'm a city girl (grew up in Chicago) but my husband moved us to Arizona almost 6 years ago and I can tell you that it feels like living in the country to me compared to Chicago! I could never live on a farm! I love animals but (insert Green Acres theme song)
That's so funny. I grew up in a town where we have horsetrails instead of sidewalks and I once rode my pony through McDonald's drive through and no one batted an eye.
(FYI - horse poo is much easier to remove than cow poo.) I'm just sayin'.
You must be channeling Ree! My kids would have loved that. They would have been non-functioning joyful all day long!
The horses just wanted to come for a visit. Seems natural to me (of course I was raised in the country).
Don't ask what's next or the world will show you. Scary.
Congrats!
My kids would have been BEGGING me to go ride them.
OMG, and i thought it was weird to find wild turkeys in my suburban yard!!!
watch for it to be raining cats and dogs next!!
I LOVE it!
When I was a teenager, we had a horse corral that we rented to a neighbor, who kept her demon horse there. One day, while alone at home, I heard a strange clomping sound outside - but it was fast. I looked out the window and saw nothing, but seconds later, the giant monster of a horse flew by. Less than 30 seconds later, he flew by again, then again and again! He was running circles around the house - and that horse could move! It was as though he was trying to prove that he couldn't be controlled or corraled.
We had a rogue rooster for a time too. It was pre-blog days, and although I photographed him at one point, that pic is long lost and there'll be no post as funny as this.
Grab the phone? Call the owner?
No! Get the CAMERA.
Way to blog.
It's got to make life exciting though right? I'm sure your daughter had a lot of fun seeing the horses too. I always thought it was cool to see horses close to my house when I was a kid.
Their so pretty!! Your daughter must of enjoyed it!
That is a trip! Your daughter must have thought her dreams of having her own horse had come true.
I freakin love it!
That wouldn't be strange for us. Those horses just thought your grass was better than theirs.
Gives new meaning to "Mom I want a pony". She got 5 horses. What a site that must have been!
Have a great day!
You have a beautiful neighborhood. And thank goodness for no gifts :)
That is so funny!! She must have been thrilled!
That's perfectly normal in Ireland.
How fun! That is what's wrong with living in the city. No rogue horses.
Oh that was funny! A gift would have been great for the garden though. :)
We just spent the day on a horse farm and I just finished blogging about it. It was funny to come here and see your post on....horses.
Congratulations on being the featured blogger today!! :)
I would love that! What a fun treat to have those unexpected beautiful animals out on the lawn! Extra cool that you took pictures too!

Careful asking what you could find in your yard next, God has a good sense of humor. :)
I don't know if I should bet on pigs or cows. Hmm
Happy Sits Day!
I'd rather a horse than a snake or some other deadly creature. :)
Yee-ha!
I'm glad they didn't leave any hostess gifts for you. That would stink.
BA-HA-HA-HA!
(sorry...couldn't resist)
Oh My Gosh, how crazy is that? I don't know what I would do if I looked outside my window and saw that!
Oh wow! That is so crazy! I just noticed you live in TN. I used to live in TN but live in WI now. But my heart will always be in TN!!! We can't wait to move back home. I mean hey, where else can you look out your window and see horses! ;)
I can't even imagine seeing that in my yard!!! How fun!
:)

Oh man... this is my 10 year-old DREAM COME TRUE!!! I read countless books where a little girl kept her horse in a make-shift paddock in her front yard. I'm so jealous you go to live this in real life, if only for a morning!
What's next? Foxes? Groundhogs? Easier to not ask....
I would have been so happy to see those horses in my yard (if I had a yard)! Minus any gifts of course, me or my daughter would certainly find them by stepping in it!
Hahaha! I grew up on a Ranch and stuff like that happened a lot. But the best time was when our neighbor the Pig Farmer passed aways and no one went to check on his pigs and they escaped onto our property and were harrassing our horses and goats -- our border collies had a field day! I'm talking 50 full grown pigs! Oh, the good old farm days....
That is great! A nice surprise and yes you are lucky there were not gifts left behind :).
Too funny. Maybe you could have them back for a free lawn mowing service! :) Enjoy your day in the spotlight w/SITS!
Well, now...you don't see THAT everyday, now do you!
OMGoodness! I remember this one! So, have there been any other animals making an appearance?
That's too funny:) Happy Thursday!
How cool is that? My daughter would have thought that she's gone to heaven if she saw horses outside her window!
that would be quite the surprise
Wow, I thought I was the only one that happened to! We have goats and the occasional goat. Gotta love life in the sticks!
I remember this one, and I love it! I would love to wake up to horses in my yard one day - I mean, the poops, not so much, but the sheer novelty of it!
This is too funny! I can just picture looking out the window and seeing a bunch of horses. CRAZY!
Oh how fun! I'd enjoy seeing the horses, but ... I'm a six year old girl at heart. I love how the horses are totally following without halters or leads or anything.
You might try a "keep off the grass" sign.
