Maybe I Really Should Live on a Farm...

We all know kids say the darnedest things...

But I can honestly say, I never once thought I would  hear my 6-year-old ask:

"Momma, why are there horses outside my window?"

No, your eyes did not deceive you... you read correctly.  I even have the photographic proof:

Michaela stayed home from school today.  While in her room earlier this morning, she happened to look out her window... and saw a horse in our front yard.  In fact, there were four horses in our yard.

Seriously.  Four horses.  In my front yard.

By the time I grabbed the camera, they were on the move... I snapped this picture looking out my kitchen window:

And then I made way to the back deck to find these beauties in my backyard, munching on my grass, like it was totally normal:

I had to call Shane at work (Me: "Dude, you are not going to believe this...")  While I was on the phone with him, a police cruiser drove by.  I don't know if someone else in the neighborhood called the police, or if the officer just happened to be on patrol (and if the officer was just on his routine patrol, I can't imagine what ran through his mind when he saw four horses where they shouldn't be!)

(I also had to call my pal Angie... to tell her it's reasons like this she needs to move out of the city limits and into the sticks with me)

By the time the officers (three in all) got a hold of the owners, the horses had made their way to the backyard of the house behind mine:

Just outside the entrance to my subdivision is a pasture where these horses are kept.  Here's the owner, leading his horses back home where they belong:

I'm just glad one of the horses didn't leave a "gift" on my lawn, if you know what I'm sayin'...

First there was a rogue rooster in my yard... then the baby goats... now horses.  I'm afraid to ask... what's next?!

Your home must have some sweet grass for all the animals who come to hang out there! Imagine what the horses might have been thinking about their little adventure!

I always have a horse in my backyard. We let our neighbor use our "valley" for his horse and he keeps it mowed.

Sounds fair to me.

Z's Mom said...

Awesome....just throw a saddle on them and go......you mean you don't have saddles just laying around?

How cool would that be though? They are really beautiful! I'm glad they were okay and didn't spooked or hit by a car or anything.

Though I would have gone out to pet them haha :)

That sort of happened to us too. My dog was barking and I went to see what she was barking at and there was a horse in my driveway.

I even posted about it....check it out if you want! :)

Aww, I miss seeing horses!! Like you, I used to live near a livery, and every now and then, a horse would venture into our backyard. Now, I live smack-bang in the middle of a city and I miss the randomness of living further out!

Wow! My son would have been so excited! Definitely a good reason to move out to the sticks!

becca greene said...

that sounds like fun to me.

Mrs. M said...

Wow! I would definitely be calling everyone I know! I can't imagine how you kept your daughter inside though-Monkey would have been out of his mind to try to get to the horses and feed them cheerios (which he believes to be the food that all animals enjoy).

hahaha! that's insane! the horses were so cute. your neighbors owe you and your family a couple rides for that one.

Oh what fun! We do live out in the sticks and we'll see a run away cow every now and then. The horses pretty much stay put in their pens.

ha! I love your post label for this.."couldn't make this up if I tried." It's true. I live just outside boston and we get coyotes...but they are pretty skiddish and don't have big hooves to dig up the grass! I'm glad they didn't leave you an surprises.

happy SITS day!

Amy said...

That is something you do not see everyday.

Stacy (the Random Cool Chick) said...

If that ever happened to us, my hubby would probably have a heart attack since he's afraid of horses...we're still working on that, because at some point we will own some horses...but we'll try to keep them out of your yard! ;)

Happy SITS Day! :)

What an exciting day! I've seen random deer in people's yards, but horses? That was first. Thank you for sharing!

Missy said...

We found a nasty muskrat in our window well a few weeks ago. ICKY I'd prefer the horse and even the poo over rat like critters!

Love the story! I had horses in my back yard a couple of weeks ago. I didn't actually catch them in my yard but I found evidence when I mowed. Big rivets from their big feet and a nice pile of poo! YIKES!

Anti-Supermom said...

Ha-ha, that would take quite the doggie bag to pick up horse poop.

Hilarious post.

Congrats on being FB - hope you enjoy your day!

HAPPY SITS DAY!
I have to say, that's pretty friggin cool. I'd probably freak but looking out your window to see that would be awesome!

Stereos and Souffles said...

That's awesome! I would love to have visiting animals like that.

I'd freak! We looked up one day to see about 4 deer in our front yard. We are not in a deer area, but there they were.

That just made me really laugh!! that is so funny...i would have loved to have seen the police officer's faces...like...what are THEY going to do?? LOL!!

Superjaxster said...

Dropping by from SITS. If this happened at my house I would see it as a sign that I needed to have more animals, but I have always wanted to keep anything that entered my yard LOL. How far away is this farm with the rogue animals? Seems like they need a better fence, huh?

Controlling My Chaos said...

Eeeew. A gift would have been ginormous, I'll bet.

stepalicious said...

How funny is it that so many of our minds right away jumped to the potential "gift!"

Marrdy said...

What fun...wayward horses. Maybe next you'll have something exotic! A Zebra maybe?

Zeemaid said...

that's so cool. My kids would have loved it. Every time we drive by a farm with horses, they scream HORSE, HORSE, HORSE.

Happy sits day! ;)

Joy said...

Thank God they were rounded up before going the wrong direction and into the path of a vehicle! We live down the road from horses too and have had this happen. Early on a foggy morning, while waiting for the kids' bus to arrive, comes a horse out of the mist...as if he owns the road...thank God he made it back home safely as well. :o)

Congrats on your SITS day!

From a fellow girl in the sticks, I so understand! Last year I looked out the window to see a cow in my back yard. This is in addition to the many wild creatures seen out there every day.

christy rose said...

Yah, gift from them would not be a very enjoyable one!

What an exciting event that you got to enjoy though!

My kids would be in heaven! My daughter just asked this morning if I could by her a horse for the back yard!

I do live on a Farm and the horses across the street come to visit us all the time. But they eat my hay. I don't like that. I send Abby out to butt them but she is afraid of the horses...they are sooooo big.

Days of Whine & Noses said...

I'm a city girl (grew up in Chicago) but my husband moved us to Arizona almost 6 years ago and I can tell you that it feels like living in the country to me compared to Chicago! I could never live on a farm! I love animals but (insert Green Acres theme song)

Vivienne said...

That's so funny. I grew up in a town where we have horsetrails instead of sidewalks and I once rode my pony through McDonald's drive through and no one batted an eye.

(FYI - horse poo is much easier to remove than cow poo.) I'm just sayin'.

natalie said...

You must be channeling Ree! My kids would have loved that. They would have been non-functioning joyful all day long!

Tranquility said...

I LOVE it!

When I was a teenager, we had a horse corral that we rented to a neighbor, who kept her demon horse there. One day, while alone at home, I heard a strange clomping sound outside - but it was fast. I looked out the window and saw nothing, but seconds later, the giant monster of a horse flew by. Less than 30 seconds later, he flew by again, then again and again! He was running circles around the house - and that horse could move! It was as though he was trying to prove that he couldn't be controlled or corraled.

Housewife Savant said...

We had a rogue rooster for a time too. It was pre-blog days, and although I photographed him at one point, that pic is long lost and there'll be no post as funny as this.
Grab the phone? Call the owner?
No! Get the CAMERA.
Way to blog.

Hahaha! I grew up on a Ranch and stuff like that happened a lot. But the best time was when our neighbor the Pig Farmer passed aways and no one went to check on his pigs and they escaped onto our property and were harrassing our horses and goats -- our border collies had a field day! I'm talking 50 full grown pigs! Oh, the good old farm days....
